Officially designated as the Major Caliber Lightweight Gun (MCLWG), this ambitious weapon system represents a fascinating peak in Cold War naval ordnance engineering. Developed in the 1970s to provide long-range, hard-hitting shore bombardment capabilities for modern destroyer hulls, this automated single-gun turret was designed to deliver the devastating punch of a heavy cruiser shell from a platform small enough to fit a standard destroyer footprint. This system underwent successful operational testing aboard the Forrest Sherman-class destroyer USS Hull (DD-945) and was slated for integration onto the Spruance-class destroyers, planned Strike Cruisers (CSGN) and nuclear-powered guided-missile cruisers like the USS Long Beach (CGN-9). At this highly popular 1/350 shipwright scale, this upgrade set captures the unique angular turret housing, long high-velocity barrel assembly and detailed base training ring of the original naval ordnance with museum-grade precision, making it an indispensable asset for discerning maritime modelers anchoring their alternative history or late Cold War fleet builds.

Engineering Precision and Weapon-Station Fidelity

At 1/350 scale, secondary gun mounts and automated weapon enclosures transition from simple background shapes into dominant visual anchors along the bow lines, exposing every structural facet, access panel door and training base track to close visual inspection. This replica set captures the distinct low-radar-cross-section geometric contours of the FMC Corporation design with exquisite clarity, completely eliminating the soft features, thick scale walls and tedious centerline cleanup typical of standard multi-piece factory kit parts. Every individual blast hood angle, maintenance hatch outline, barrel collar sleeve and deck tie-down component is rendered with sharp, industrial clarity, providing a flawless structural foundation right out of the box and completely replacing the need for hyper-fragile multi-piece photo-etched brass workarounds.

Museum-Quality Ordnance Replication: Developed using original technical layouts, historical shipyard specifications and archival weapon blueprints to accurately reproduce the exact physical dimensions, geometric turret facets and rotational footprint characteristic of the historic Mark 71 test program.

True-to-Scale Component Profiles: Replicates the true volumetric contours of the heavy steel turret housing, creating authentic shadow lines and realistic structural relief that standard factory kit placeholders or flat aftermarket additions cannot realistically duplicate.

Streamlined Integrated Detailing: Features fine mechanical details modeled cleanly directly into the main casting, drastically reducing assembly friction and the frustrating, tedious alignment tasks associated with scratch-building or managing fragile multi-piece components.

Intelligent Hollowed Engineering: Expertly designed with an optimized, hollowed-out internal profile to drastically reduce topside material weight across its physical footprint. Detail the horizontal deck mounting ring in a dark non-skid grey or deep charcoal tone to match standard deck safety borders. Paint the inner recess of the long barrel muzzle in a deep flat black to simulate natural mechanical shadow depth.

Realistic Operational Weathering: Cold War naval weapons thrive on subtle tonal filtering and realistic mechanical texturing. Use rich dark oil washes or specialized enamel pin-washes to let deep shadows settle naturally around the access panels, turret doors and base rotational rings. Add highly realistic weathering effects like vertical orange-brown rust streaks weeping down the vertical plates from high-friction maintenance hinges or deck joints, subtle bare-metal silver metallic scratching along structural fasteners to simulate tool usage by the crew, and faint gray exhaust or powder residue tracking back from the muzzle along the top of the barrel to capture the true look of a hard-working automated weapon system actively deploying heavy ammunition during intense firing trials at sea.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0740/2015/9657/files/1350-usn-8-inch-55-mark-71-cal-deck-gun-set_1.jpg?v=1793831593
